Sony BDP-S550 Blu-ray Player Video Review

The Sony BDP-S550 1090p Blu-Ray Player Features

The Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray player is often known as the big brother of the very popular SonyBDP-S350 model. Like it’s ‘younger brother’, the S550 has all the latest Blu-ray features and a little extra for the additional $70. For starters, it runs on BD 2.0, which is the latest and final (at least for now) format for Blu-ray movies.

The configuration and interface of the Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray player is very similar to previous Sony DVD players. It has the Emmy-winning Xross Media Bar that allows users to conveniently access the various applications on the Blu-ray player. If you have a Sony Bravia LCD or Plasma TV, both the machines will work well together with the Bravia Sync function.

The Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray player also has a Ethernet port that allows the machine to access the internet. It has a BD-Live feature that allows you to go online to access and download the latest previews, special scenes and exclusive features. The blu-ray player also has 1GB in memory that allows for more blu-ray movie features.

Since the S350 model also has most of the features above, are there any good reasons to buy the more expensive Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray player? One of the major differences that can be found in the S550 is that is has a 7.1 analog audio output. Some older audio receiver would only support analog audio outputs. The S550 is a good buy if you have an older and very expensive analog only audio receiver. Otherwise the S350 is just a good.

Canon Vixia HF10 Review

The Canon Vixia HF10 AVCHD camcorder is a cool little camera but has some drawbacks. The HF10 has 16gb of built-in memory and also uses SDHC flash cards to record high-def video. The format is hard to edit, though. Sound is from built-in HF10 mics in the wide shots and from an ATR35s wired lav in the long shots.

A Hobbyist Review of the Canon HV30 Camcorder

Dr. Diana provides a hobbyist review of the latest high definition consumer camcorder by Canon the HV30. She provides a brief overview of some of the modifications and upgrades to the HV30 over the HV20 model which was rated #1 consumer camcorder in 2007.

Some tips Dr. Diana has:

  • You will need a firewire cable to upload your video to your computer.
  • HV20 and 30 capture video via Dv tape not SD card.
  • HV30 uses a mini SD card but only for capturing digital still photographs.
  • You do not need to use high def tapes for the camera. However, use a good+ quality i.e., Panasonic AMQ (AY-DVM63AMQ).
  • Dr. Diana uses Pinnacle studio ultimate version 11. She has already observed that placing standard video with high def vid in the same timeline is not working with Pinnacle.
